Pricier NatGas vs Yr-Earlier to Stir Switch to Coal

Published: Apr 03, 2013

A near 50% jump in spring/summer natural-gas prices from record lows in 2012 will cause power generators to switch to coal, cutting gas use by about 2 bcf/day, Credit Suisse estimates. Prices at decade lows under $2.00/mmBtu in April 2012 helped spark a switch from coal to gas of some 8 bcf/day, and record utility gas use. Spring/summer price this year expected to average $3.73/mmBtu vs $2.535 a year earlier. (david.bird@dowjones.com)
