Nymex February gasoline futures hit their highest level since Aug. 31 Friday and climbed nearly 15c/gallon in past four days amid scheduled and unplanned refinery closures and high oil prices. Crude price -- 80% of cost of gasoline -- averaging record January high above $100/bbl. AAA Daily Fuel Gauge says regular gasoline averages $3.39/gal Friday. Pump price averages 70c above futures, analysts say, meaning prices soon may hit $3.49 to $3.63/gal. Retail gasoline averaged $3.10/gal last January. (david.bird@dowjones.com) |
