NYC Snow Just a Preview of What’s to Come for Plains, South

Jan 28, 2010

By Charlotte Porter

Jan. 28 (Bloomberg) -- A light snow swirled through the streets of New York City today, the leading edge of a winter blast that may dump more than a foot (30 centimeters) of snow from Texas to North Carolina.

Snow, ice and sleet will dip into the southern Plains today as temperatures fall below freezing. AccuWeather Inc. meteorologist Katie Storbeck warned the combination may mean slippery roads, canceled flights and downed power lines in Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas and Arkansas.

Today’s snow in the Northeast is part of a weak system brushing past the region, she said on the Web site of the State College, Pennsylvania-based forecaster. The Plains storm is forecast to push into the mid-Atlantic states by Friday, blanketing Virginia and North Carolina with an icy mix, although Storbeck said it will probably miss the areas north of Philadelphia.

The systems were brewed earlier this week off the coast of California, which was pounded by a series of storms last week that forced the evacuation of more than 2,100 homes in areas threatened by rockslides and mudflows.

As of Jan. 25, more than 100 inches of snow had fallen on parts of the California mountains, while the Arizona Snowbowl had 92 inches and Jackson Hole, Wyoming, reported 43 inches, said AccuWeather meteorologist Jesse Ferrell on his blog.
