EIA Chief: 25% Of US Gas Supplies To Come From Shale By 2025

Mar 10, 2010

HOUSTON (Dow Jones)--Natural-gas shales will provide a quarter of U.S. supplies of the fuel by 2025, up from 11% now, U.S. Energy Information Administration head Richard Newell said Wednesday.

Any slowdown in the rapid ramp-up of production from the deeply buried, onshore, shale-rock formations is more likely to be caused by "low expectations" of demand rather than by technical challenges, Newell said in a speech at the IHS Cambridge Energy Research Associates annual conference.

The unexpected boost in gas supplies from shale in recent years has been deemed a "game changer" in the North American energy picture, said Newell, who serves as administrator of the EIA, the statistical arm of the Department of Energy.

As recently as three years ago, most analysts thought North American gas output had reached a terminal state of decline.
